Sports Days Are Coming!
Next week is all about fun, teamwork, and school spirit as we gear up for our Sports Days! These events are a fantastic opportunity for students to get involved, have a go, and cheer on their friends. We want to see everyone showing pride in their Sports House, encouraging each other, and celebrating participation as much as achievement. Let’s make it a week full of energy, positivity, and community spirit!
Prep Dance
Our Prep students have been busy learning some fantastic moves as part of our Prep Dance Program, and they’re excited to show off what they’ve learned. Join us on Monday afternoon (2.30pm) in the Hall for a special performance that celebrates their hard work, confidence, and joy for dancing. It’s a wonderful opportunity to support our youngest learners as they take the stage – we can’t wait to see them move.
Weekly Update Video – Out Now!
This week’s update has been brought to you by our amazing student presenters, Charlie and Sienna! They’ve done a fantastic job sharing the highlights from around Hilliard SS and keeping us all informed with style and confidence.
Check it out to stay up to date with what’s been happening across the school. Great work, Charlie and Sienna – future news anchors in the making!

Reporting Changes
Yura families,
This update will outline the changes you will observe in the way we report student learning at the end of Semester 1 and into the future.
Academic Reporting Update: Academic reporting provides a point-in-time summary of students’ achievement at the end of each semester based on evidence collected throughout the unit of work.
As our school transitions to Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum, our reporting structure has been updated to align with the revised curriculum. Below is a summary of the key changes you can expect in your child’s report card in 2025:
Reporting by Year Level and Learning Area
- All year levels will receive a Level of Achievement for English and Mathematics each semester.
- Prep students will also receive a Level of Achievement for Health and Physical Education each semester.
- In Years 1–6, students will receive a final Level of Achievement at the end of the year for:
- Science
- HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences)
- Technologies
- Health and Physical Education
- The Arts will continue to be reported at the end of each band in Years 2, 4, and 6.
- Japanese will be:
- Experienced (taught and monitored) in Years 3 and 4
- Formally reported in Semester 2 of Years 5 and 6
Important Notes
- Even if a subject does not receive a Level of Achievement each semester, students are still actively engaging in and progressing through the learning area.
- All subjects are taught, and student progress is assessed and monitored throughout the year.
- Prep students experience additional learning areas beyond those reported. “Experiencing” means that students are accessing teaching and learning in those areas, and their progress is monitored, but not summatively assessed or formally reported.
Report Cards should be read in conjunction with the year level curriculum newsletter that is sent out to families at the beginning of each term. This document outlines each of the subjects that children are learning, and the topics covered within the units of work.
Communication and Support
Teachers are always available to discuss your child’s progress. We encourage families to:
- Attend scheduled parent-teacher interviews
- Contact the school to book an appointment at any time for further discussion
We thank you for your continued support as we work together to enhance learning and reporting practices for every student.
Thanks,
Karina Masonwells
Head of Curriculum

Expectation of the Week

Term 2, 2025 Event Calendar
From the Office

We have an enormous amount of lost property at the moment, named items have been returned to students' classrooms. unnamed items are in the temporary office at the SSC; there are also wheelie bins with lost property located near the tuckshop.
We strongly encourage parents and caregivers to label all items that come to school to assist us in reuniting lost items with their rightful owners.

Yr 4 Egg Drop Challenge!!!

Year 4 Egg Drop Challenge!
After an exciting term exploring the properties of materials, our clever Year 4 students put their knowledge to the test with the Egg Drop Experiment!
Using their understanding of strength, flexibility, and absorption, students designed creative contraptions to protect a raw egg from a high fall.
There were cheers, gasps, and a few splatters—but most importantly, there was loads of learning and fun! Great job, Year 4 scientists!

Yr 3&4 iNNOVATE Group

The Year 3 and 4 iNNOVATE groups are busy at work creating their media projects.
They have been coming up with solutions to reduce bullying, help students to make new friends and support those who are experiencing bullying.
Their projects will conclude at the end of this term before our new cohort begins!
Yr 5&6 iNNOVATE Group

The year 5/6 iNNOVATE group are taking part in the Young Change Agents $20 Boss initiative.
They have been busy developing their Social Enterprise business ideas. They have created their budgets and determined their item sale prices.
In week 10, each team will pitch their business ideas to a panel of experts for feedback before moving into the development of prototypes.
Yr 2 Feedback Expo

Our Year 2 students took part in a Feedback Expo!
They've been learning how to express their opinions by comparing different stories.
Each class visited one another to share their thoughts using the "Two Stars and a Wish" strategy — celebrating what they loved and suggesting ways to improve.
A fantastic way to build confidence and communication skills!

Yr 2 Mad About Science!

Our Year 2 students were Mad About Science during an exciting incursion on Thursday!
They explored the water cycle, investigated how oil spills affect ocean water, and discovered how trees absorb water through capillary action.
Each topic came to life with hands-on experiments — such a fun and engaging way to learn about the world around us!
