From the Principal
Yura Hilliard,
It was great to be able to complete another full week of learning without disruptions. Our senior school have been participating in swimming lessons and from all reports they are enjoying these sessions. Thank you to all the families who ensured payments were in on time. It is important that all payments are in before the cut off date so that we can arrange payments with the external companies.
Communication: Please remember at Hilliard SS we work as a team with you to improve learning for your children, therefore, if you have any concerns or questions we ask you to communicate with staff in the following way:
1st communicate with classroom teacher - emails are usually the best way to book a meeting or clarifly any issues/ concerns.
2nd contact the Deputy Principal - email / call the office to book a time
3rd contact the Principal - email / call the office to book a time
Our staff also enjoy receiving positive feedback, so please don't hesitate to send us emails supporting the work our staff do. We have had some lovely emails lately and even some chocolates and flowers! We really appreciate parent feedback.
Parking: A few parents have reported that some people are parking in the drop off zones. Please be mindful of protecting the safety of all our students and follow all of the parking signs. I believe council/police will be around in the near future to ensure we are all following the rules.
District Sports: We have a number of students who have been selected for District Sporting teams. We are very proud of these students and equally proud of the programs and opportunities that we provide our students. We have three staff members who were also invited to be District Coaches and a part of the management - Craig Horsfall, Tim Wolens and Janelle Mills. Thank you, for providing these opportunities.
Learning: When you are talking to your children about their learning here are some great questions you can use:
1. What are you learning?
2. How are you doing?
3. How do you know?
4. How can you improve?
5. Where do you go for help?
All classrooms are using learning walls and 'bump it up' walls that support students to understand what they are learning, why they are learning it, and how to improve.
Mask Update: As per requirements, any staff member that has been a close contact or positive with COVID will be required to wear a mask for seven days after leaving isolation.
Clubs: We are looking forward to starting our lunch time clubs next term. A number of staff have expressed interest in offering Lego, Robotics, eSports, singing, gardening and drama to name just a few. So, tell your children to listen out next term for the clubs that will be starting.
Finally, we have another busy week as we move into the final week of Term 1. We look forward to seeing parents at our Leadership Assembly, Easter Hat parade and more.
We learn, we lead and we succeed!

Parents are invited to come in and join us for this celebration. All P-3 students will be making something that they can wear at school, however we encourage any families who wish to get creative to help their child make something at home that they can bring in to school to wear for the parade.

ROAD SAFETY
We are receiving a lot of phone calls and complaints regarding the traffic outside the school. Our School Crossing Supervisors have also reported near misses with students not utilising the crossings properly.
Please remember, schools are busy areas, where there are often lots of children—who do not always understand the danger of roads and vehicles. Make sure to take extra care when parking on school grounds and on the roads and streets around the school and follow the signed parking rules at all times.
Parking safety tips
If you choose to park on the roads or streets around your children’s school:
- say goodbye to your children on the school side of the road—never get them to cross the road to their school’s entrance alone
- walk across the road and meet your children after school (never call out to them from the other side)
- try to leave home early to avoid arriving at the busiest times
- follow the directions of all signs
- park a safe distance from all crossings
- always single park (double parking causes accidents and traffic jams)
- try parking a few streets away from the school and walking with your children
- organise a car pool with other parents—to reduce the number of cars trying to park around your children’s schoolReporting parked vehicles
If someone parks a vehicle illegally or dangerously they can be given a fine and their vehicle may be towed. You can help keep your children’s school zone safe by reporting badly parked vehicles.
Contact your council to report an illegally or dangerously parked vehicle.

P And C
Yura Families,
As we look to the end of term 1 we have some exciting updates to share. Firstly, thank you for all of the support from parents and teachers this year, the new garden beds are looking fantastic!
We had the AGM last week and welcomed many faces both old and new. Election of the executive committee allowed members to step into new roles to provide a well-deserved break to others. As we congratulate Sam Eady who steps into the role of President, we say a big thank you to Jodie Jones who steps down from president to provide much needed support as Vice President. This year we have elected a second Vice President, Melanie Kevern to further support the executive team. And a big welcome to Elisha Singleton as our new Treasurer and Tracey Connell as our new Secretary. With these exciting changes we are also grateful to have the support of our outgoing executive team, Kristy Gorry and Jasmin Jones, who remain as members within the P&C and thank them for their amazing efforts. We couldn’t have had the success this last year without you.
Some further exciting updates to share:
- Continuation of the Dance Subcommittee, and a newly created ‘Sports and Recreation’ Subcommittee.
- Tuckshop refit has been boosted by a very generous $35K grant, won by an application prepared and submitted by the P&C
- Cold water bubblers are in the planning and fundraising stage
- Playground upgrades are being worked towards with fundraising, due to the costs of playground upgrades in schools it is not a sprint, and we are grateful for all the support from students and families with our fundraising events
Upcoming fundraisers:
- Easter raffle is open: tickets available through QKR
- Freedom Property competition: vote online to win $1,000 for Hilliard to spend on composting equipment
- Disco: we have a team working hard preparing this, with hopes to hold it in May
- Colour-run: following the success of last year’s event we will hold another this year
Thank you for all of your ongoing support, please keep an eye out on Facebook for fundraising and project updates, and if you want to get involved as a member or volunteer at the events please do not hesitate to reach out to the P&C directly, email: pandc@hilliardss.eq.edu.au, or come along and enjoy the fun at the next meeting on May 9th.

Online Triple P for families of children with eczema
Every day, thousands of Australian children suffer the effects of eczema, and families struggle with managing eczema and children’s behavioural and emotional adjustment.
Healthy Living Triple P is an adaptation of the successful Triple P - Positive Parenting Program, offering practical ideas and support for parents of children with eczema. This innovative online program is designed to help parents manage their child’s eczema more easily, help children cope with their eczema and emotions, prevent and manage difficult child behaviour, and reduce the impact of eczema on families.
Over the next few months, parents of 2-10 year old children with eczema are able to access Healthy Living Triple P free of charge as part of a research project through the Queensland Children’s Hospital, Griffith University, and the University of Queensland. For more information, please visit us at https://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/eczema/, contact Dr Amy Mitchell on (07) 3735 6462, or email healthyliving@uq.edu.au.
