Weekly Update: Term 1 Week 10
Yura families,
As Term 1 comes to a close, I would like to thank our entire school community for your incredible support throughout what has been a busy but rewarding term—even with a cyclone thrown into the mix! We hope all of our students have a well earned rest. I look forward to welcoming everyone back for a fantastic Term 2.
Thanks Mia and Ericka for this week's production of the Weekly News.

Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
In Term 2, students in Year 4-6 will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey.
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The QEW Survey is designed to measure how students view their wellbeing and engagement across different topics. The information we get from the survey helps us better understand and support our students.
An information letter will be sent out to parents and carers closer to the time. If you have any questions, please contact the school. More information, including FAQs, can be found on the Education website: (https://qed.qld.gov.au/publications/reports/statistics/schooling/students/queensland-engagement-wellbeing-survey).

OSPREY CUP VOLLEYBALL
This week, our Hilliard State School volleyball teams took to the courts at Wellington Point State High School for an exciting day of competition in the Osprey Cup tournament, where six schools competed for top honours. Our students played with great determination, developed new skills, and, most importantly, had a fun and supportive time with their teammates.
The students were split into two teams—the Year 6 Senior Boys and Senior Girls—and both groups showcased fantastic teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day. After playing a total of four games, the results were impressive: the Year 6 Senior Boys finished in 3rd place, while the Senior Girls took home 2nd place! The Osprey Cup tournament was not just about competition; it was a fantastic opportunity for all students to support one another, build new skills, and create lasting memories. With six schools involved in the competition, it was an amazing chance to test their skills against a variety of different local schools. We are incredibly proud of all the students for their effort and positive attitude, both on and off the court.Looking ahead, we are excited to announce that next term’s Osprey Cup sport will be Basketball! Trials for these teams will be held early next term, so stay tuned for more information on how to get involved.
Congratulations again to all our volleyball players for an outstanding effort at this year’s Osprey Cup! Go Team Hilliard!

YEAR 5 AND 6 SLSQ BEACH SAFETY PROGRAM
This week, Year 5 and 6 students had the incredible opportunity to take part in a Practical Beach Safety program delivered by Queensland Surf Life Saving at Ruby Bay in Cleveland.
The day was filled with hands-on learning and exciting activities that not only helped the students improve their understanding of beach safety but also allowed them to experience the beautiful outdoors in a meaningful way.
The program included a variety of beach and water-based activities, including rescue techniques, patient care practices, and safety procedures. Students were able to test their skills in real-life scenarios, building confidence in their ability to respond to emergencies at the beach. The day concluded with an insightful beach safety talk, where students gained valuable knowledge about staying safe while enjoying the water. With expert instructors guiding them, students learned essential tips on how to recognise dangerous conditions, stay safe in the surf, and help others in need.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to Queensland Surf Life Saving for providing such a fantastic experience for our students. Additionally, we are grateful to our teachers for their support in organising the program and ensuring the students had a safe and enjoyable day. It was a day filled with fun, education, and deeper understanding of the importance of safety in and around water.

From the P&C
Yura Hilliard families and congratulations on making it through to the end of Term 1!!!
Our AGM and monthly General meetings were held on Monday, 24 March. Our new executive committee is below:
President: Sam Eady
Vice President: Alice Sudall
Treasurer: Mandie Reynolds
Secretary: Keryn Baker
I would like to thank Tracey Connell and Lorraine Horne, who both stepped down at the meeting, for all their hard work and support over the last few years.
It was great to see some new parents attend the meeting and join the P&C Committee. It’s not too late to join up if you missed it last week.
At the meeting it was agreed that we would establish a small working team to review the current student dress code and school uniform. To complete a review and implement any changes will take quite a few months so at this stage any changes to the current uniform will occur no earlier than the beginning of 2026 and even then, there will be a rollout period where students will still be allowed to wear the old uniform. So please do not hold off ordering any uniform items if you have been worried it was going to be changed soon.
The other working team formed will investigate options for next year’s booklists. With the cost of living on the rise we are looking at different options where we can save families some money.

May 2025 is looking to be an extremely busy month at Hilliard with the following fundraising events:
Federal Election BBQ, Plant and Cake stall – Saturday 3 May 2025 - https://volunteersignup.org/F8M8H
Mother’s Day Stall – Wednesday 7 May and Thursday 8 May 2025 - https://volunteersignup.org/97PT8
Colour Fun Run – Friday, 9 May 2025 – (signup register will be available shortly)
We are looking for as many helpers as we can get so we can share the load across the 3 events. To make it easier for everyone to volunteer we have created an online sign-up register for each event. All you need to do is click on the hyperlinks above for the event you can help at and enter your details. There are a variety of tasks that we need help with and there is even an option for you to donate food items or drinks for the Election BBQ if you cannot physically help at any of the events.
The committee has decided that all fundraising profits from these events will go towards upgrading the multipurpose area (i.e. tennis court) to be more functional. So please, any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated and will help us reach our goal.
Our next P&C General meeting will be on Monday, 28th April 2025 in the staffroom at 6.30pm. We would love to see you there.
I would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter and safe holidays.
Sam Eady
P&C President
