Issue 3, 11th March 2022
From the Principal
Yura families
Another exciting couple of weeks at Hilliard SS and within the community. We have started this week settling back into our routines which is something that has certainly been difficult this year. We are glad to hear that most of our families were not significantly impacted by the floods and weather.
COVID Normal
The most exciting news for our school and community is that we have moved into "COVID normal" operations. What does this mean for our school?
- Masks are no longer required
- School assemblies, camps and excursions are now permitted
- Parents are able to volunteer and return to the school grounds
- school functions can be held
We are looking forward to seeing you back at assemblies, helping at the TuckerBox or classroom and all the other wonderful experiences that Hilliard provides.
IceBlocks
With all of the hot days around it has been great to see that our P&C are supporting our communtiy by selling Free-zies for $1 at both gates. Please get in and support our P&C!
P&C AGM
The Hilliard State School P&C Association will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Monday, 14th March at 6.30pm. We are excited to elect our New Executive Committee. The team consists of the following officers:
- President
- Vice President
- Secretary
- Treasurer
Please send in your nominations if you are interested in any positions. The team is a great group of parents who work very hard for improving our school and would appreciate more assistance. It's a great way to get to know the school, staff and parents! Please come along and join in!
Assemblies
We are excited to let you all know that our Assemblies will begin next Friday (18th March) at 2.30pm. Parents are invited to join us at this time and hear the messages, celebrate our awards and be a part of the school. We are looking forward to being able to have the school community together once more.
From the School Leadership Team
Yura Hilliard families
I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff, students and families of the Hilliard State School community for making me feel so welcome to your wonderful school. I am very excited to be joining Hilliard SS this term as the Assistant Principal for Prep to Year 3. As I walk around classes, I can see a very strong commitment to quality teaching and learning by our students and school staff, to ensure that our students are doing their very best every day to Learn, Lead and Succeed.
One of the programs that we are focusing on in the Junior School this year is called Read Write Inc. Read Write Inc. is a dynamic, whole-school approach to teaching synthetic phonics that is proven to create fluent, enthusiastic readers, confident speakers and willing writers. We are really excited to see the impact that this program will have on improving literacy outcomes for our students.
Ask your student in Prep, Year 1 or Year 2 to tell you who "Fred" is and explain what "Fred talk" is!
Have a great week everyone,
Tracey Young
P-3 Assistant Principal

Term 1 Event Calendar
From your friendly office staff
Dear parents and caregivers,
It has definitely been a busy and interesting term so far! We have a few reminders for our families:
Students taking medication at school – please ensure your child brings their water bottle to the office when taking medication. We are no longer able to provide cups for students to use.
Students arriving late/leaving early: please ensure that students are signed in/out at the office. Parents/caregivers must come to the office first, sign the child in/out and then collect the child from their classroom. To limit class interruptions, we can no longer call classrooms for children to be sent to the office when leaving early.
Upcoming Payment Dates:
- Tuesday 15th March
- Year 3-6 Swimming
- Thursday 31st March
- Student Resource Scheme
- Instrumental Music (Hire Fee & Levy)
- Year 6 Senior Shirts
- Thursday 28th April
- Aerobics and Dance invoices
No late payments are accepted for camps and excursions – if you have any queries or need to apply for a payment plan/extension please contact the office before the due date.
Have a lovely weekend,
Lisa, Katy and Keryn
Curriculum Corner
Yura Hilliard Families!
We have had unexpected weather and some changes to routine since our last newsletter but I trust that all of our Hilliard Families are safe and healthy. Our community has certainly shown resilience and adapted to sudden changes amazingly!
Parent Teacher Interviews
Teachers will hold Parent Teacher Interviews in the last week of this term (28/3-1/4) to share your child/children's progress. A letter will be emailed in the near future with more details and instructions on how to book a meeting time via our online booking system SOBS.
Promotional Video
Next week there will be a camera crew at Hilliard State School filming a promotional video for our school. This video will be a celebration of learning highlighting the strengths of our amazing school and will showcase what students are doing. Something exciting to look out for.
NAPLAN
In Term 2, Year 3 and 5 students will complete NAPLAN testing in Reading, Writing, Numeracy and Language Conventions (spelling and grammar). Practice testing will occur in the last week of this term and the actual testing is scheduled for 10-12th of May 2022. Testing will be in a mostly digital format so it will be important that the correct apps are installed on your child's iPad. An email explaining how to set up your child's iPad will be sent out before week 10 to ensure all students are ready for practice tests.
Harmony Day
On Friday 18th March our school will be celebrating Harmony Day - a day to celebrate unity and our culturally diverse society. Teachers will lead students through activities to reinforce the key message: "Everybody belongs." To celebrate this wonderful day, all students are allowed to wear orange clothing to school to show an awareness of inclusivity. Please ensure clothing and footwear adheres to school policies. As we will be raising awareness and not fundraising, a gold coin will not be required.
Have a wonderful week ahead and all the very best.

IT News
Hello Families,
Friendly reminder to all our families to ensure all iPads and Apps are kept up-to-date where possible. This will ensure that when your child's teacher shares new work for particular apps it is compatible. It is good to check for new software or app updates once a week.
We have been made aware that some parents are having school emails received into the junk folder. To try and help eliminate this please move the message to the inbox. All bulk emails are sent from no_reply@hilliardss.eq.edu.au
Schoolzine App
This term Hilliard State School will be using a new App. The Schoolzine app, otherwise known as SZapp, will be replacing ePublisher. SZapp is available to download now by simply going to the App Store or Google Play. You will be asked for a four-digit code. This is 3177. You will only need to enter this once when you initially download the app. We encourage all families to download SZapp. You will be able to check the school events calendar, contact staff, all permission forms and much more! We will also use the App to send out notifications to you, eg. when an excursion may be running late, interschool sport changes, reminders re: free dress days etc.
