Australian Early Development Census
Conducted every 3 years, the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) is the most comprehensive collection of its kind in the world. The information gained from the census helps to shape the future and wellbeing of our children by providing evidence to support education, health and community policy and planning.
At Hilliard SS, we are currently training our Prep teachers to do our AEDC data collection, starting on 14th May. Only students who are in their first year of schooling are involved in AEDC. Prep families should have received an email with a letter and fact sheet about AEDC data collection. We are hopeful that we will be able to complete the census for all 100 of our Prep students.
What the AEDC data means for schools
The AEDC collection provides vital information for school planning and community collaboration to support children's early learning, development and transition to school.
The AEDC data can help schools to:
- plan and support children's successful transition to school
- support student learning and wellbeing, and inform school improvement planning
- raise awareness of the importance of children's early years
- implement programs and services for children in the community to support early child development
- act as a platform to forge collaborative community partnerships.
About the AEDC
The AEDC is a nationwide data collection that occurs every 3 years.
The AEDC measures how children are developing as they transition into their first year of school based on 5 key areas known as 'domains':
- physical health and wellbeing
- social competence
- emotional maturity
- language and cognitive skills (school-based)
- communication skills and general knowledge.
Physical health and wellbeing
Children's physical readiness for the school day, physical independence and gross and fine motor skills.
Social competence
Children's overall social competence, responsibility and respect, approach to learning and readiness to explore new things.
Emotional maturity
Children's prosocial and helping behaviours and absence of anxious and fearful behaviour, aggressive behaviour and hyperactivity and inattention.
Language and cognitive skills (school-based)
Children's basic literacy, interest in literacy, numeracy and memory, advanced literacy and basic numeracy.
Communication skills and general knowledge
Children's communication skills and general knowledge base on broad developmental competencies and skills measured in the school context.
2021 key findings
In 2021, Queensland saw its highest rate of participation with 98.6% of Australian schools participating in the AEDC collection. For Queensland, the data is representative of approximately 65,000 children, or 98.4% of the 2021 Prep cohort.
The results of the 2021 AEDC indicate that:
- Queensland had the greatest level of improvement across all jurisdictions
- Queensland has seen a significant increase in the proportion of children who are starting school on track on all developmental domains
- Queensland vulnerability rates are still higher than the national average, but the gap has narrowed
- developmental vulnerability is not equally distributed across all cohorts of children.

From the P&C
Yura families,
Thank you to everyone for supporting our Mother’s Day stall this week especially those who donated raffle prizes and items for the stall including some yummy baked treats! It was great to see some new faces helping at the stall. We hope everyone enjoys the gifts the children have purchased and that you have a lovely Mothers’ Day on Sunday.
We are pleased to announce that we have recently won two grants! The first one is the Gambling Community Benefit grant for $34,895 and is to be used to upgrade the hall canteen including fixing the power issue, installing a new commercial oven and some other appliances. We can’t wait to have a proper functioning canteen! The second one is the Volunteer Grant for $2,716 and is to purchase a square register and some mobile eskies. The aim of this grant is to support our volunteers and we hope that these items will help our volunteers when we hold fundraising events. A big thank you to our Grants Writer, Lauren Allen, for her hard work applying for the various grants and helping us raise some much-needed funds!
Our next committee meeting is on Monday, 13 May 2024 starting at 6.30pm in the staffroom and we would love to see some new faces! If you cannot make it in person, you can join the meeting online via Teams plus kids are welcome to come along too if you don’t have a babysitter. We will be discussing the Term 3 Disco and ideas for our Movie Night at the end of the year. If you have any ideas or would like to help out, we would love to have you join us.
A reminder of our upcoming events:
Sports Day Cupcake Competition and hall canteen – Tuesday, 11 June (Prep to Year 2) and Wednesday, 12 June (Years 3 to 6)
Our annual cupcake competition will again take place on both sports days. Keep an eye out for more information about this shortly.
We will be opening the hall canteen for the parents on both days; however, we will need volunteers to help throughout the day. So, while your kids are not competing (and especially during the lunch breaks) we would love your help.
Please email hilliardpandcfundraising@gmail.com if you are interested in helping at any of these events. We really do appreciate any help you may be able to give.
Under 8’s day – Friday, 21 June 2024
We will be providing some yummy treats for students and their younger siblings, so we will be looking for some volunteers to help hand these out. If you are interested, please email hilliardpandcfundraising@gmail.com
Finally, we would like to wish all the students competing at the TFT Schoolaerobics Regional competition this Sunday good luck and we hope you have lots of fun as well.
If you have any questions about the above events or anything P&C related, please do not hesitate to email me at hilliardpandcpresident@gmail.com
Thanks so much
