Issue 1, 11th February 2022
From the Principal
Yura Hilliard families,
It has certainly been a different start to 2022 but it has been filled with smiles and excitment. A thank you to the whole school community for assisting the school in ensuring all of our students are safe and supported.
Drop Off / Pick Ups: We are going to continue our drop off and pick up procedures for at least the next week and will review it as we receive any further information. The Prep teachers will be emailing a slight change to the prep procedures to ensure social distancing.
Communication: We will continue to update families using Facebook, school emails, class emails, SMS and phone calls. We have some parents informing us that the emails from the school are going directly to their "Junk Folders". Could you please check and set a rule so that your email system knows it is a trusted address?
Uniforms: Thank you for ensuring your children are in their full school uniform. Just a reminder that shoes need to be predominantly black or white and hair accessories in the school's colours. Labelling all of your child's belongings means that we can get it back to them if it is misplaced.
COVID Update: If we receive notification that we have had a positive case at school we will inform you via a school email. We had a number of students isolating early in the week and some weren't able to start school due to COVID, therefore, our first reported case was on Thursday and you should have received an email Thursday afternoon informing you. You will notice that the details we are permitted to provide are quite general this is so that we can protect that identity of the student or staff member. We thank you for your understanding in the matter.
New Staff: You will have noticed on Facebook that we have been welcoming new staff over the last week or two. During 2022, we have a number of our staff members on Long Service Leave and therefore have been able to welcome new staff to the Hilliard Team. I know that you will join us in welcoming them to our community.
If you ever have any concerns / queries please don't hesitate to contact the school to discuss.
We learn, lead and succeed in a caring community.

Last year, the HSS leadership team began exploring highly effective, structured and systematic approaches to teaching literacy, more specifically reading and writing. The ReadWrite Inc. program, created by Ruth Miskin, focuses on a systematic approach, which supports students to read more easily because they enjoy it. As a school, HSS made a commitment that every teacher, school leader, and teacher’s aide would receive professional learning, practice and understanding of the ReadWrite Inc. program so to further develop our own knowledge and skills in reading and writing. Therefore, building a team of reading educators across the school. We understand that the only way we can build a community of fluent readers, confident speakers and engaged writers, is the need for a whole-school approach, so that in time, we can proudly state that every child at HSS is a reader who loves to read and does so fluently. We look forward to seeing the amazing gains our junior school students make.

The Australian Acting Academy
The greatest Gift a parent can give there creative child is show that they “GET THEM!"
Creative kids tend to think differently. This can make them feel undervalued, like they don’t fit in and that people just don’t get them The Australian Acting Academy uses acting classes to support your creative child, to allow them to see how valuable the way they think is, and give them a tribe of like minded people who allow them to feel safe enough to push themselves out of their comfort zone.
The skills learnt will not only develop their acting but give them life skills that will last forever.
This term is called The Core of Acting, it is fun, exciting, cutting edge and hands down the best place for creative kids to train in Queensland.
The best part is you can try a class for just $1 and if your child doesn’t like our brand of magic, that is all you will pay!
So come join our tribe and support your child to expand creatively.
