Issue 5, 31st March 2023
From the Principal
It’s hard to believe that we are already at our last day of Term 1 for 2023.
What a great start we have all had to the year. Term 1 has seen us all settle really well into our new year levels and classes, and teachers and students are enjoying being in Year Level Blocks again this year.
Term 1 has been full of great events, starting with our Welcome BBQ for Hilliard families, who came in to meet teachers and see our classrooms. It was a great afternoon, and we loved the opportunity to meet our new Hilliard families.
We’ve had special tuckshop theme days, student leader ceremonies, swimming lessons for grades 3 to 6, NAPLAN testing for grades 3 and 5 students, Playgroup on Friday mornings which is lots of fun, a variety of lunch time clubs for students to keep them busy and engaged with new and different activities, breakfast club, the Wesley Program, our new Perceptual Motor Program for Preps to 2s, as well as a range of sporting events and competitions.
We finished off the term this week with parent teacher interviews, and the Easter Hat parade yesterday in the hall for our whole school community. Thankyou to all the parents who made time to come in and talk with teachers about their child’s learning and progress. We know that kids learn best when schools and parents work together.
Our Easter Hat Parade yesterday was a great success! There were so many parents who came along to join in, and it was so much fun for everyone. The Preps, 1s and 2s looked amazing with all the incredible Easter Hats they had made, and we even had a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny! DJ Sparkles, aka Mrs Crease, and her “Sparklers” did a terrific job getting us all up on our feet to have some Easter dancing fun. I must also say a very special thank-you to Connor and Lilly-Rose from Prep who decorated my glorious Easter Hat for the parade.
First and foremost though, Term 1 has been all about teaching and learning at Hilliard State School. Every day in every classroom, we have great teaching and learning happening, as having students achieve their best is what Hilliard is all about.
Thankyou to our teachers for developing such interesting and engaging Term 1 units for all our subjects, so that students can learn what they need to learn, and thankyou also to all our teacher-aides who support our children with their learning all day every day. We are lucky to have such amazing staff across the whole school here at Hilliard.
After such a great first term of 2023, tomorrow we start our two week school holiday break. And then, we will all be back again for more great learning and lots of school fun for Term 2. Events for Term 2 start off with our Cross Country, Fun Run and ANZAC day assemblies.
We know we have a lot to look forward to for next term, but for now we wish all of our Hilliard students, staff and families in our school community a wonderful Easter, and safe relaxing holidays.

First Nations Newsletter
Yura families,
Welcome to our first edition of the Mob News. This newsletter will be released once a term to reflect on what our Mob has been up to.
It has been a great start to the year for all our Mob throughout the school.
Leaders
At the beginning of the year Jessica B and Gemma W attended the school leader's induction to receive their badges. The two leaders have hit the ground running and have had a great start to their Leadership Roles by doing our Welcome / Acknowledgement to Country each week at our assembly, assisting with Deadly Choices and much more.
The mob has also seen another student receive his Student Council Badge. Well done Kylan B.
Deadly Choices
The Mob has had an amazing start to Deadly Choices this Term for our Year 3 - 6 students. This term has seen the Mob starting to learn about Deadly Choices Healthy Lifestyle this covers health education program aimed at supporting participants to be positive role models and mentors for their families, peer group and community by leading a healthly lifestyle.
The Mob also had a member from Ultimate Motocross Coaching come to visit and talked to the mob about dirt bike riding. Ultimate Motocross use dirt bike riding as a motivating tool to encourage students to have a good attitude, good attendance and good behaviour at school and if they have an interest in dirt bike riding what career pathways are available in the industry.
Term 2 will see our Mob learn and participate Deadly Choices in the Junior Tobacco Education Program through an animated series. The program aims to educate young people about cultural history, harmful effects of tobacco smoke, and how they can support those around them with their quit journey.
This term we have started our student Health Checks which for the first time included hearing checks. This year Health Checks will be completed in all school terms as when the students fall due. Thanks to Deadly Choices and Yulu-Burri-Ba.
Our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 Mob will participate in Deadly Choices in Semester 2 with our Year 1 & Year 2 in Term 3 and Prep Term 4.
Solid Pathways
This year Hilliard SS 3 of our Mob (Gemma, Sonny & Kylan) across Year 5 & 6 were invited to participate in Solid Pathways. To be able to participate in Solid Pathways students need to receive a B or above in Maths and Science at the end of the school semester. It has been a great start for them.
Our Year 5 students have learnt about Can Data Tell Our Story Data.
Program overview
Stories can bring numbers and figures to life. In this unit, students will be introduced to data science through posing statistical questions and collecting data. Students will evaluate their own experiences and represent these through data. They will explore larger datasets and explain the stories that these represent. Through these activities students will learn about the data science process, begin using data to tell stories, and think about the ethics involved in working with data. Students will appreciate how powerful data can be and how we can use it to change the world around us.
Our Year 6 student has learnt about The Burning Question
Program Overview
Land and fire management is a complex endeavour and has been fraught with controversy since the arrival of Europeans on this land. In this unit, students will look at the science behind Indigenous cultural burning and its impact on land, animals and people. They will study the science of fire, investigate and review how fire management practices have changed since colonisation. Students will consider ways that cultural burning can be used as a way to reduce the frequency and/or severity of future bushfires and consider the question should we fear fire?
I am happy to say our same students have been invited back to participate again in Term 2. I would like to wish them all the best and keep up the hard work.
School Sport
This term several of our Mob participated in the Osprey Touch interschool competition. All students competed well and supported all their teammates in great sportspersonship.
Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)
This year I have started our journey in working on our very own Hilliard SS Reconciliation Action Plan. A Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) program provides a framework for schools to be inclusive in their work and contribute to national reconciliation.
To help with this process I have formed a small committee to assist in completing our Reconciliation Action Plan. Our committee is made up of:
- School Principal
- First Nations Student Engagement TA
- Head of Inclusion
- Social Worker
- Year 6 Classroom Teacher
- P&C Member
- First Nations Parent
Once we have a draft document ready this will be shared for community consultation including consultation with our Elders.
Yarning Circle
Shortly our Yarning Circle and surrounds will be under going a small facelift. I cannot wait to see the final finished project.
Lastly, I would like to wish all our Mob a very relaxing and enjoyable school holidays. I look forward to seeing all our Mob back at school on Monday 17th April 2023.
