From the Principal
Due to Mrs Witham being ill all week there will be no Principal news this week.
We look forward to seeing Mrs Witham back at school next week!
From the Leadership Team
Focus on Writing
Using iPads to enhance teaching and learning is an integral component of education here at Hilliard SS, to ensure we are preparing students for the 21st Century and jobs of the future. Alongside iPad use, we also prioritise the teaching and learning of writing in all our classrooms. Writing is just as much an important focus at Hilliard SS, as well as reading and oral language development.
In our junior school, we run a daily one hour program dedicated to the learning of reading and writing. This program is called Read Write Inc, or RWI for short. Students work in groups, learning to decode sounds which leads to learning to read and write. As students progress through the RWI program, they begin to learn to read and write words and texts of increasing complexity. Having students working in groups at their own level ensures that these lessons are targeted to each child's individual stage of literacy development, and allows students to progress through learning at their own pace.
We are really proud of the achievements our students have made with learning to read and write at Hilliard SS, and love to celebrate student achievement and progress. Here are some photos of some of our junior school students with their work - we are so proud of you!
Under 8s Day
Last week, families of students in Prep - 3 were emailed an information letter about our upcoming Under 8s Day celebration. Attached to the letter is an online form we are asking parents to complete as soon as possible. Knowing how many families will be joining us for the day will help us to plan spaces for activities, and also ensure that we have catered for everyone. We don't want anyone missing out on a show bag, the treats, the sausage sizzle, or any of the fun arts and crafts on offer!
Huge thanks go to our Hilliard SS P&C for sponsoring the Baby Animal Farm, Dan from IGA Alex Hills for sponsoring the treats for the children, and the YMCA for sponsoring the free sausage sizzle. We are so lucky to be surrounded by such a caring and supportive community here at Hilliard SS.
Report Cards
This week our students have been working hard on their end of term assessments, and teachers are currently working hard on preparing Semester 1 report cards, which will be emailed home to parents on Thursday 22nd June 2023, after 10am.
Academic reporting involves communicating information to parents, carers and students about student achievement and progress for each learning area/subject undertaken, at a point in time. Reporting assists in building the school-parent partnership to improve student learning.
Students are assessed against the achievement standards of the Australian Curriculum for each subject, and teachers then use these assessments tasks to determine an overall rating for the semester.
Students’ report cards will reflect only the subjects that they are required to be assessed and reported for, according to the Qld Curriculum, Assessment & Reporting Framework. This means that reports may look different to previous years, as not all subjects that students learn are required to be reported on. This helps us to focus our teaching and learning, and assessment and reporting.
Ratings are based on a five point scale, dependent on the year level. The table below explains the rating scales used on report cards for different year levels:
If you have any questions about report cards, please contact your child’s teacher. Parent-teacher interviews will also be offered in Term 3.
Expectation of the Week

TRIVIA NIGHT TOMORROW NIGHT!!!
The Tucker Box
Hello from the Tuckerbox!
Capture the Flag
This week Students participated in our Capture the Flag competition with gusto! Students were engaged and competitive in the hunt for the flags of the 5 countries we visited on our Round the World trip, so much so we decided to release a second set of flags for students to hunt for on Wednesday of this week. The winners of this competition (of which there will be two) will be drawn on Parade on Friday so good luck to all entrants vying for the prize of dinner cooked by the Tuckshop for their whole family.
An Update on Gluten Free Nuggets
Our usual brand of chicken nuggets is Inghams Gluten Free crumbed variety. We use this brand for all nuggets so parents don’t have to specify if their child is gluten free and can order safely with confidence. Unfortunately Inghams have a hold up on their supply at the moment and without a suitable alternative the nuggets we have had to serve for the past few weeks have been Steggels which contain gluten. We have had word from our suppliers that this will be the case heading into July at least. However we have a large supply on back order so as soon as they get them, we will get them. We would like to thank all families for their patience and understanding regarding this hold up and we can't wait to bring our old favourites back.
Sustainable Spoons
We soft launched our Sustainable Spoons Program last week in the Prep eating area and both Staff and Students have been doing a fantastic job. Next term we are hoping to extend the launch to include the year 5/6 eating area, but we need more donated cutlery to do so. If you have any unused spoons, forks or even teaspoons that you would like to donate towards the cause please don’t hesitate to bring them to the Tuckshop, we would gratefully appreciate them 😊
Volunteers
This week we have seen some new volunteer faces in the Tuckshop and we could not be more thrilled. Thank you to Belinda and Halie for rolling up your sleeves with me this week, it was wonderful to see and feel your support 😊
So if you would like to volunteer in the Tuckshop please email us at hilliardtuckshop@gmail.com
