Volunteers Week
At Hilliard SS we are lucky to have so many of our wonderful community volunteer their time and efforts to support our school! To celebrate and thank our volunteers, we would like to invite all of our volunteers to come in next Thursday afternoon to share a cuppa and slice of cake.
Under 8s Day
All families of P-3 students, including younger siblings, are invited to join us for our Under 8s Day celebration on Friday 23rd June. It will be lots of fun so you won't want to miss it - mark it in your diaries now!
Semester 1 Report Cards
Teachers are currently working hard to prepare Semester 1 Report Cards, to provide detailed information for parents about their child/ren’s academic achievements, efforts and behaviour. Achievement levels for subjects are based on student performance on summative assessment tasks, which are designed to give students multiple opportunities to demonstrate their learning and provide a means for teachers to make judgements about student work samples, as compared to the Australian Curriculum Year Level Achievement Standards.
We are very proud to see every child’s improvement towards achieving their individual learning goals, which is monitored by regular feedback between teachers and students.
Semester 1 Report Cards will be emailed out to parents on Thursday 22nd June. Parents, please ensure your contact details are up to date at the school office, including a working email address that accepts .pdf attachments, to make sure you receive your child/ren’s report card.
Welcome to our Preservice Teachers for Term 2
This week we have welcomed another group of preservice teachers at Hilliard SS. It is great that our teachers at Hilliard are generously contributing their time and expertise, creating our teachers of the future, and we thank them for doing so. If you see these preservice teachers around our school, please don't hesitate to say hello and make them feel welcome in our wonderful school community.

National Simultaneous Storytime
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is a nationwide event that takes place annually on the fourth Wednesday of May. This year, it will be held on May 24th, 2023. During NSS, people of all ages come together to read the same story at the same time. This creates a powerful sense of community and encourages young people to develop a lifelong love of reading.
At Hilliard State School, our P-2 junior school will participate in national simultaneous story time by sharing “The Speedy Sloth” with their year level.
We invite parents at home to participate by sharing your favourite story together before or after school.
Prep Vision Screening - make sure your child is signed up!
All prep students are being offered free vision screening here at Hilliard SS on Wednesday 7th June. Please make sure that you have completed the online consent form to ensure that your prep child does not miss out. If you have any questions, please ask your child's Prep teacher.

Our school photos are being held on Wednesday 24th May. Sibling photos will be held before school from 7.30am in the Hall. Orders for sibling photos must be received online by Tuesday 23rd May, or by using the envelope on the day.

Breakfast Club
Dear Hilliard Community,
Our Breakfast Club runs every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30am at the Student Support Centre. It has been very well received with around 80 students regularly attending. We have a great team of Year 5 and 6 helpers every week that show great leadership initiatives. We are also very thankful to the YMCA who provide us with milk, bread, butter, jam and vegemite for the whole program. We are also very appreciative of all the donations of milo people make every week.
Due to the success of our Breakfast Club, we run out of milo and honey weekly. For this reason, I am asking for ongoing donations of these products. We have a wonderful community here at Hilliard and it shows through your generous donations.
Breakfast Club gives the students an opportunity to catch up with their friends and get set for the day. This also gives me an opportunity to check in with them and assists with building the leadership qualities of the students that serve.
Thanks Coach Lee.

Yura Hilliard families
Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the Mother’s Day stall, it is one of our favourite events of the year and always such fun for the kids.
We wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all of the amazing mother figures out there, we hope you have a wonderful time!
The Tucker Box
Hello From Mexico! This week we visited our second country of our Round the World Trip. Last weeks offering of Sushi, representing Japan was very popular and so were this weeks dishes from Mexico, Quesadillas and Tacos.
Next week we head to India and will be offering Butter Chicken and Homemade Naan Bread on Thursday and Friday as our Daily Special before heading into Europe to Italy, the following week. Thank you for coming on this fun ride with us and we hope students are enjoying the trip 😊
The current state of supply for many things is tough and this week we find ourselves out of our usual brand of Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets. After speaking with our supplier, we have been given an ETA of July before these are back in stock. If your child has an allergy to Gluten, please keep in mind that the nuggets we will be supplying during this time will be a brand that contains gluten. We will bring you an update when we receive our order in July 😊
This week we are excited to launch a new sustainability trial with our Prep students, using reusable forks and spoons at lunchtimes. The cutley will be collected and returned to the Tuckerbox each break for cleaning and sanitization. We hope this trial will be a success and that eventually we can roll it out to the entire school.
If you have any metal forks, spoons or teaspoons that you no longer use, we would love donations to be made to the Tuckerbox so we can kick start this initiative and get one step closer to reducing our waste as a school in a significant way. As always we could not achieve these things without your support
If you’ve been thinking about volunteering in the Tuckerbox but haven’t reached out yet, please don’t be shy everyone is welcome (and kids LOVE seeing you there) 😊 if you would like to volunteer in the Tuckerbox please email us at hilliardtuckshop@gmail.com

Containers For Change
Our P&C Coordinates a Containers for Change Queensland recycling scheme to raise additional funds for our school community.
There are orange bins placed around the school to collect any containers students might have at break times, or alternatively you can donate containers
directly at any depot and use the code: Hilliard State School Scheme Id #C10161576
This can be used across Queensland, so any family members further afield can contribute too. For more information on what containers are eligible, see www.containersforchange.com.au
Fire Ants
Fire ants are one of the world’s most invasive pests and they have the potential to devastate our environment, economy and the outdoor way of life we know and love. To stop the spread of fire ants, the Department of Education is collaborating with the National Fire Ant Eradication Program to manage fire ants across schools within South East Queensland. This important work will help protect our schools and community from the dangers posed by fire ants.
An initial pilot program has treated 46 schools across the Logan, Ipswich, Somerset and Gold Coast City local government areas (Metropolitan and South East education regions). This will expand over the coming years to include additional schools. The treatment consists of applying two rounds of an insect growth regulator which sterilises the fire ant queen and prevents new ants from maturing into adults. These types of products are widely used in mosquito control programs, cockroach treatment and pet flea collars and when used according to instructions, are not harmful to humans, pets or wildlife.
The first round of treatment occurred in early 2023 and round two is being completed during April and May. The fire ant bait is being applied by experienced pest management technicians.
The school treatment program supports efforts to eradicate fire ants within South East Queensland by suppressing the fire ant population in areas until eradication treatment takes place. Under the Biosecurity Act 2014 all Queenslanders have an obligation to manage biosecurity risks. The Department of Education is meeting its obligations by managing fire ants on land it owns or manages.
The National Fire Ant Eradication Program is also running a range of community projects to provide residents in selected suburbs with free fire ant bait to treat their yards to support eradication goals.
