Issue 19, 2nd December 2022
From the Principal
As we move into our last week of Term 4, 2022, I would like to express my gratitude for all the support we have received this year. Once again, the year did not start how we all hoped but we all worked together to make this a very successful year. I love receiving all the positive emails about how wonderful our staff are and the extra lengths they go to each and every day to make learning engaging. Please feel free to email teachers, admin, staff etc any positive feedback you may have.
Whilst we spent some of our week farewelling our Yr 6 students during the Graduation Assembly we were also honoured to meet our 70 new Prep students and their parents at our Orientation. The Pre Preps loved their new school hats and their “Hilliard Hero” t-shirts. Welcome to the Hilliard Community.
Hilliard State School was honoured to be invited to an afternoon with the Queensland and Australian Apple team on Thursday. We have some positive news to share about our school and another achievement…so watch our Facebook page.
Just some final reminders:
Volunteer Evening: Please join us for our volunteer evening to thank you for your support during the year. We will have nibbles and cold drinks. Please use the link below to register your attendance. https://forms.office.com/r/FeVDdTtuWF
Last P&C Meeting 2022: We would love to see people join us for the last P&C meeting for 2022. This will be a celebration meeting to enjoy our volunteers and all the work we have achieved over the year.
P-2 Swimming: This continues during the week. Don’t forget to send their swimming gear each day.
Yr 6 Fun Day: Our Yr 6s will be celebrating the end of their Primary School years with a new Hilliard tradition…. Fun Day! Let’s hope the rain holds off for them.
Assemblies: We have one more assembly to go for the year. Our Week 10 assembly will be held on the Thursday next week at 2.30pm. We will be informally celebrating the year and farewelling our Yr 6 students.
Student ‘Meet the Teacher’: Our students will be all visiting their new classrooms and meeting their new teachers. As you can imagine, this is a very busy time, so we ask all parents, to allow us to manage this process. I know the students will come home and tell you all about their teachers and classroom for 2023.
Report Cards: Please ensure the school has your correct email address as Report Cards will be emailed on Thursday to the email address recorded in OneSchool.
Bunnings Stall: On Thursday, Dec 8th, we have been offered a Christmas Stall at Bunnings. Keep an eye out on Facebook for any support that the P&C require. This will be the last fundraiser for the year and would appreciate any amount of support that you can give. Even if it is only 30mins.
As this is the last newsletter for 2022, I would like to thank all the parents, carers and families who have supported our school and leadership team this year. I thank the P&C again, for their fundraising efforts and their work on ensuring we build a strong community.
I am looking forward to continuing our work with the community, students, and staff into the new year. Enjoy your festive holiday and stay safe.

Semester 2 Report Cards
As mentioned in the last newsletter, teachers are currently working hard on preparing Semester 2 report cards, which will be emailed home to parents on 8th December, after 10am.
Academic reporting involves communicating information to parents, carers and students about student achievement and progress for each learning area/subject undertaken, at a point in time. Reporting builds the school-parent partnership to improve student learning.
Students are assessed against the achievement standards of the Australian Curriculum for each subject, and teachers then use these assessments tasks to determine an overall rating for the semester.
Students’ report cards will reflect only the subjects that they are required to be assessed and reported for, according to the Qld Curriculum, Assessment & Reporting Framework, which will look different to previous years.
Ratings are based on a five point scale, dependent on the year level. The table below explains the rating scales used on report cards for different year levels:
If you have any questions about report cards, please contact your child’s teacher.
A Special Welcome to our 2023 Preps!
Yesterday morning, we were so excited to welcome in our newest Hilliard little heroes at the Prep 2023 Orientation Day! Despite the rainy conditions, they still had a wonderful time getting dressed up in their “practice uniform” and coming in to their new big school to meet their new teachers and classmates!
It was a lovely opportunity also for families to come in and meet each other, and also meet some school staff and find out more about our great school. Forming friendships with other school parents and families can be a great help in supporting children (and mums and dads too!) with their transition to school.
We are looking forward to welcoming these students again at the beginning of next year for their first day of Prep. What an exciting moment to look forward to!
2023 Prep Orientation Day - Welcome to our Hilliard Little Heroes!
School Hats for current Preps
Just a friendly reminder to our current Prep parents that the light blue Prep hats are only for Prep children. With the big, exciting step up into Grade 1 next year, parents will need to ensure that they have purchased a proper school hat for their children to sue from the first school day in 2023. Please contact the uniform shop if you need any help with ordering school hats. Don’t forget that you will need to know your child’s sport house to get the right colour for the hat.
Meet the Teacher
Next Tuesday afternoon, students will have the opportunity to meet their new teacher for 2023, and see their new classroom. As you can imagine, this is a busy afternoon, so we ask that parents not come into the school prior to 3pm unless necessary. Students will all bring home a letter on Tuesday afternoon, advising parents of their class and teacher information for next year. Our teachers are looking forward to meeting their new 2023 classes. Parents will have the opportunity to come in and meet teachers on Wednesday 1st February 2023 for our “Meet the Teacher” sessions, and a Welcome to Hilliard BBQ.
From your friendly office staff
Wow! Term 4 is pretty much done and dusted! Please find below some final reminders for the term:
- It is really important for parents / caregivers to notify the office if your child is absent from school. You can do this by leaving a message on the absence line, use the QParents app, or by phoning the office on 3820 1666
- All outstanding accounts must be paid in full before the end of the school year. Any outstanding amounts will carry over to next year which may result in students being unable to participate in the Student Resource Scheme for 2023.
- Please ensure that your child takes all of their belongings home with them next week. The office will close on Friday and will not reopen until the week before school starts back.
- If your child has medication at school could you please arrange for an adult to collect it for the holiday period.
Most importantly, we hope you and your family have a very safe and happy festive season. We can't wait to see you again next year!
Best wishes,
Katy, Lisa and Keryn

The year that was…
Yura Hilliard families
Wow, what a crazy busy year 2022 has been! At the beginning of this year, the P&C committee had a list of things we wanted to achieve and I’m happy to report that we have ticked off most of those items. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the generous support from all of the families and friends at Hilliard for which we are very grateful.
So far this year we have contributed to the following:
- $10,000 – Dance Subcommittee Start-up funds (this is to be repaid within the next 3 years)
- $8,267 – Bench Seating in the years 1 & 2 lunch area
- $500 – District Sports Representatives’ sponsorship
- $22,473.50 – Cold water bubblers (including the plumbing and electrical installation fees)
- $2,500 – Science Incursion fee
- $4,620 – Mural in years 3&4 lunch area
- $4,007.29 – Apple Pens
- $445.92 – Recycle bins
- $21,358.19 ($56,358.19 less $35,000 grant) – Tuckshop renovations and purchase of new electrical equipment
Through the various fundraising events such as the disco, colour fun run, Bunnings BBQ’s, stalls, Christmas raffle etc. we have also managed to raise a little over $30,000 this year to go towards upgrading our playground facilities. At a recent P&C committee meeting we agreed to add a further $20,000 to this to enable the school to refurbish the playground in the year 1 and 2 area prior to Christmas.
Our goal for 2023 is to continue raising funds to assist the school in upgrading other play areas around the school for the other year levels. For example, upgrading the sandpit in the year 3 and 4 play area (i.e. moving it from the existing garden bed to a proper sandpit area), installing football goals on the main oval, creating two mini soccer fields on the junior oval, installing cricket pitches, installing a ninja ropes course on the junior oval, to name just a few of the ideas we are looking at.
We are looking forward to organising our regular fundraising activities next year such as the stalls and our two feature fundraising events for next year will be a ‘Trivia/Games night for the parents’ in Term 2 and a ‘Christmas Movie Night for the whole family’ in Term 4. If you would like to be involved in any way please come along to a meeting, everyone is welcome. Our first meeting for 2023 will be at 6.30pm on Monday, 13 February in the school staffroom.
From everyone on the P&C committee we would like to wish all of our Hilliard families a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
Thanks
Sam Eady
Hilliard SS P&C President
FROM THE TUCKERBOX
We are nearly there! Nearly the end of another wonderful year at the Hilliard State School Tuckshop. This year we welcomed our new convenor Ms Courtney, had our kitchen renovated and our students helped us give our Kookuburra mascot a beautiful name, Kubeeri. We cannot thank all of our wonderful volunteers enough for the support and time you have put into The Tuckerbox this year, and we hope you all enjoyed your Christmas Catch Up over the Weekend.

have all volunteered their time in our Tuckshop this year and deserve a special mention.
We also have handed out our Community Awards to some very special Grade 6 helpers on Parade this week, who have given up their time to come in during their lunch breaks to help us sell treats over the Counter, and they deserve a special pat on the back for displaying such community spirit at their young age, so well done.
We are operating Monday Tuesday and Wednesday only in Week 10 so we can spend the last two days packing down and deep cleaning the Space ready for it to sit tight over the Holiday Break. We are also running down our stock over the next week so please be prepared with a second preference if items run out.
On the last two days of school, please don’t be afraid to still approach the Tuckshop to purchase perishable grocery items that we can’t freeze over the break, such as flavoured milks, plain milk, eggs, cheese and vegetables, we are more than happy to sell them to parents :)
And that’s about it for the year from the Tuckerbox, wishing you a very happy and Safe Summer Holiday Break and we cannot wait to see you back in 2023!
Love and smiles, Ms Courtney and Mrs Kat
Upcoming 2022 events:

Containers For Change
Our P&C Coordinates a Containers for Change Queensland recycling scheme to raise additional funds for our school community. There are orange bins placed around the school to collect any containers students might have at break times, or alternatively you can donate containers directly at any depot and use: Hilliard State School Scheme Id #C10161576
This can be used across Queensland, so any family members further afield can contribute too. For more information on what containers are eligible, see www.containersforchange.com.au
