Issue 18, 18th November 2022
From the Principal
Yura families/carers,
I start this update with a positive. Our Yr 1 students were visited by the Queensland Fire Service this week to discuss Fire Safety. The fire fighters reported that our students were very well-mannered, engaged and kind to each other. We are always proud of the way our students represent Hilliard SS when we are on excursions or when we have visitors to our school. Well done, Yr 1s.
Our booklists for 2023 were emailed to all families this week. If you did not receive this email, please check our website and Facebook for the links. We conducted a new ‘tender’ process this year for the booklists and Lyle at Mt Cotton News was successful. So, we continue to support our local community businesses.
At Hilliard SS, we often discuss with our students the difference between ‘mean’ and ‘bullying’. There are various definitions for bullying, however, the basic premise is the same. We discuss the following:
Mean is when people say something intentionally hurtful and they do it once. Bullying is when someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and keeps doing it – even when they have been told to stop.
Our students are taught to STOP, WALK, REPORT – Tell the person to STOP, WALK away (if possible) and REPORT to an adult who can assist. Please support your children to understand these steps also. When it comes to digital behaviour we follow : STOP, BLOCK, REPORT.
At Hilliard SS, we value the positive impact our volunteers have on our school community. In order to thank them for their time and efforts, we are holding a Volunteer Celebration evening on 5th December 2022. Please see the invitation attached. If you have volunteered at Hilliard over the 2022 year, we would love you to join us for nibbles and cold drinks. Please ensure you RSVP by the link so that we can organise catering.
Earlier this week we added a reminder about students being on the grounds before supervision. As you would be aware, all schools provide supervision at a reasonable hour before school and at Hilliard, our Teacher Aides are on duty in the undercover areas from 8.40am. Prior to this time, teachers are preparing for the day so if students arrive before that time, they are unsupervised. We are noticing that some students are getting to school earlier and earlier and incidents are occurring. In order to ensure the safety of all our students, I need them to arrive when there is supervision. If your child is invited by a staff member to join a before school club, this is supervised and therefore approved.
Thank you to our Religious Instruction teachers who have been involved all year. The students watched an end of year production on Wednesday and were able to thank the teachers for their support and encouragement.
Our Junior and Senior Band performed for the school on Tuesday. It was wonderful to see the development in our students, particularly our Yr 4s who started in the program at the beginning of this year. If your child/ren is currently in Yr 3, 4 or 5 , they are eligible to apply to be a part of the instrumental program for 2023. Please contact the administration or class teacher for details.
Once again, thank you for all your support,
Leanne Witham

Books & Blankets - Invitation to current Prep Families
Parents and Grandparents of our current Prep students have been invited to join us for this exciting event over the next few weeks. This is a special end of year celebration of how much we love books and reading in Prep! We hope to see many of you there.
Welcoming our 2023 Preps
Over the past few months we have been welcoming our incoming Prep students for 2023, and their families. It has been lovely to meet and get to know our new students, and to have them come and visit for Come & Play afternoons on Thursdays. They have had so much fun seeing a Prep classroom, meeting new classmates and friends, reading stories, singing songs and doing lots of fun hands-on activities.
On Thursday 1st December, our 2023 Preppies will all come in for Orientation morning. They will get to practice dressing up in a special “uniform” to come along to ‘big school’, and meet their new teacher and classmates in their new classroom for next year. We are looking forward to this exciting day.
Come and Play Fun!
Semester 2 Report Cards
Teachers are currently working hard to prepare Semester 2 Report Cards, to provide detailed information for parents about their child/ren’s academic achievements, efforts and behaviour. Achievement levels for subjects are based on student performance on summative assessment tasks, which are designed to give students multiple opportunities to demonstrate their learning and provide a means for teachers to make judgements about student work samples, as compared to the Australian Curriculum Year Level Achievement Standards.
We are very proud to see every child’s improvement towards achieving their individual learning goals, which is monitored by regular feedback between teachers and students.
Semester 2 Report Cards will be emailed out to parents on Thursday 8th December. Parents, please ensure your contact details are up to date at the school office, including a working email address that accepts .pdf attachments, to make sure you receive your child/ren’s report card.

Containers For Change
Our P&C Coordinates a Containers for Change Queensland recycling scheme to raise additional funds for our school community. There are orange bins placed around the school to collect any containers students might have at break times, or alternatively you can donate containers directly at any depot and use: Hilliard State School Scheme Id #C10161576
This can be used across Queensland, so any family members further afield can contribute too. For more information on what containers are eligible, see www.containersforchange.com.au
