Issue 17, 4th November 2022
From the Principal
Yura families and carers,
Our senior swimming carnival was our focus event for this week and was extremely successful. Janelle (HPE teacher) did an amazing job organising the day. I know you can all imagine the work that goes into such a day - including all of the risk assessments, organising names and races, buses, entry to pool, staff rosters etc. It was also fantastic to see the commitment from all the staff to ensure it was a successful and positive event for your students. Finally, thank you to the parents who came and supported us on the day. It was great to see families / parents enjoying the event. I am happy to announce that one of the student teams won the parent/student relay race with the parents coming 2nd. Wow! Some of our parents are great swimmers.
The best feedback we received after the day, from the pool, was that they noticed our positive student behaviour and were impressed how clean we kept the area. Go Hilliard!
Congratulations to our staff who have been selected for 2023 District and Regional official positions.
- Craig Horsfall (Mr Craig): Bayside Under 12 Rugby League Manager and Under 12 Met East Navy (tier 1) Manager
- Tim Wolens (Mr Wolens): Bayside Under 12 Rugby League Coach.
Congratulations and all the best for 2023.
It is that time of year where teachers are preparing for the reporting period. This means that students are involved in completing assessments items. In the Junior school, we try to NOT to put too much emphasis on the word 'assessment' and rather collect 'evidence' of learning in an age appropriate manner. You may notice in the senior school, that the students are clearly aware of the assessment tasks. As we know the importance of the home - school connection, we encourage you to discuss "what they are learning." Report cards are not due out until the end of the year.
Our enrolment numbers are looking positive for next year and we are retaining most students. If you know anyone who is interested in attending Hilliard SS for 2023 could you please encourage them to contact the school ASAP so that we can plan for teachers/classes?
Leaving Hilliard next year? Please let us know so that we can also consider our enrolment numbers. Please email your child's class teacher or admin@hilliardss.eq.edu.au
On Thursday, we held a practice Lockdown as required as part of our Workplace, Health and Safety processes. All teachers communicated to the students that this was only a drill. If you happen to attend the school during a lockdown process, we ask that if you are in the school that you move into any building and lockdown there or if you aren't in the school grounds, we ask that you wait outside the grounds.
I would like to acknowledge the parents who send positive messages / emails about our staff and the work that they do. We are always open to feedback and appreciate the positive feedback also. It is always wonderful to be able to contact a staff member and share the positive news.
The Weekly Update video will be on Facebook also.
Thanks,
Leanne Witham

Testimonials:
"The Hilliard Dance program has been terrific for my children. Their confidence in themselves has been supported by the program itself, as well as the dance teachers and Hilliard teachers who run it. It is the most cost-effective program I’ve seen, allowing my children to do a variety of dance genres they love without breaking our family’s budget. The friendships and energetic dance routines the kids love are a bonus". Stacey D.
“My daughter loves Hilliard Dance! She loves dancing with her school friends and learning new routines from the wonderful coaches that we have. Not only has she made some new friends, I have also become friends with other dance parents and there is a real comradery amongst everyone involved in the dance program. The added bonus of being in the school dance program is that it is very affordable, compared to external dance companies, and you don't need to do any running around as the kids are already at school for their training sessions”. A proud mum.

Containers For Change
Our P&C Coordinates a Containers for Change Queensland recycling scheme to raise additional funds for our school community.
There are orange bins placed around the school to collect any containers students might have at break times, or alternatively you can donate containers directly at any depot and use the following code: Hilliard State School Scheme Id #C10161576
This can be used across Queensland, so any family members further afield can contribute too. For more information on what containers are eligible, see www.containersforchange.com.au
