Issue 15, 7th October 2022
From the Principal
Yura,
Welcome to Term 4! We have another busy term coming up with a variety of exciting learning opportunities for your children to be involved in. The first event was the Colour Run, which was held today. We thank you for all your support of the fundraising committee. The students certainly seemed to enjoy getting wet and ‘coloured’ as did the staff who joined in.
Road Safety:
We received an update from the Department of Transport outlining their latest technology developed to keep our students safe:
In a world-first road safety initiative, new speed camera technology will soon target speeding drivers at selected school zones across Queensland. Everyone has a role in keeping our roads safe. It is imperative drivers reduce their speed to the signed 40 km/h speed limit and be aware of activity by students on or near the road. Speed cameras will only operate during school zone times at the selected schools. Parents, and carers dropping off or picking up students are urged to comply with school zone speed limits. Those who slow down will not be penalised.
We have not been informed whether our school will be a part of this initiative, however, I am sure that our parents will continue to follow all road rules to ensure the safety of our students.
Uniforms:
A reminder that our school uniform includes white, black or grey socks. There are a few students starting to wear bright socks to school. I ask that you join us in continuing to respect our school’s uniform and provide them with the correct uniform for school.
Learning:
Our staff are continuing their focus on Reading across the school. We are seeing significant improvements in our data in this area as we explicitly teach and focus on reading. We have had senior students who have not been engaged in reading telling us about the chapter books they read on the holidays.
The best support you can always give your children in this area is to read to them….often.
IGA Dan:
A big thank you to Dan from IGA – Alexandra Hills who raised $4000 for our school to support students in need. We are lucky to have such a supportive business as a part of our local community. Dan will be joining us at Assembly – Week 3 to present the cheque to the school.
NAPLAN:
All of the parent reports from 2022 NAPLAN should have all been received by parents. Yr 3 students received their reports during Week 10 – Term 3 and our Yr 5s were offered to either collect them during Week 10 – Term 3 or they were sent home earlier this week. If you have any questions and/or concerns please email your class teacher first and then follow up with the Senior Leadership Team, if required.
New Staff:
Welcome to Vanessa Kennedy who is joining the school as Guidance Officer for Term 4. Jenny Adermann is on Long Service Leave and will rejoin us in 2023. If you require any advice or support from the GO, please contact your class teacher and/or Senior Leadership Team.
Welcome back to Belle Jones, who is returning 0.6 in The Arts role for Term 4 and welcome to Tegan Kunne who will be doing the remaining 0.4 for The Arts in Term 4.
Thank you for your support,
Leanne Witham

Welcoming our 2023 Preps
This term we will begin welcoming our newest and littlest Hilliard students, our 2023 Preps! To support these children and their families with their transition to 'big school', we are offering a number of opportunities for them to come and visit and participate in activities here at Hilliard. Details of these are in the poster below. Make sure that if you see these new faces in our school you make them feel welcome. We are looking forward to having lots of new families join our wonderful school community.
If you know of any families who are yet to enrol for Prep next year, please let them know it is not too late to enrol, and to please contact our school office.

Facilities Update:
We had lots of people working on our school grounds over the holidays and our plans are slowly coming together:
- The prep shade sail has been replaced and is looking lovely and bright
- The hall roof was scheduled to be repaired over the holiday. Due to unfavourable weather conditions it was unable to go ahead. We are currently looking at weather forecasts and the school schedule to plan a new date as the hall will be out of action for up to three days whilst works are completed
- In each of the undercover eating areas there are new paintings of our Hilliard Totem
- The old cricket nets have been removed from the junior oval making it a safer space for students and providing more space for upcoming improvements
- Cookie has installed a small equipment shed in our year 3/4 undercover area. We will also be placing blue equipment bins in each undercover area that will be filled with sports equipment for the kids to play with during break times
- We have received a number of quotes and ideas for a new junior playground, the grant submission is due at the end of November
We have a very busy term ahead and I look forward to sharing all the projects we have planned.

The Tucker Box
Welcome back to Term 4! An exciting Term for us here at the Hilliard Tuckerbox, as we get to know our new and improved kitchen. We can’t wait to share photos and videos with you very soon.
As of Week 2, The Tuckerbox will be open 5 days a week Monday to Friday.
This term also brings some new rules for our Prep Classes as they are now allowed to visit the Tuckerbox during their 2nd Break. We ask that you discuss with your Preppie the following:
- Bringing the correct money (in coins) for what you would like to buy (we will be sending home a price list in the next week)
- Staying with your Tuckshop buddy while walking to the Tuckshop
- Not buying food for our friends, only ourself
The best way to stay across all happenings around the Tuckerbox is by joining our Facebook Page, The Hilliard Tuckerbox 😊
There is one week left to get your suggestions in for our Kookaburra Mascot’s new name. We would love a First Nations name to pay homage to his native species so if your little person is struggling to think of one, parents please jump on Google and get involved 😊
This week we will also be adding two new Gluten Free snack options to our menu! Delicious Rice Cakes that can be ordered Plain or with Margarine, Vegemite and Margarine or Vegemite and Cheese and we have also added a second cracker option to Jatz and Cheese. You can now order Jatz and Cheese or Rice Crackers and Cheese. Yum!
Lastly, we are always so happy to welcome new volunteers to our Tuckerbox. If you haven’t volunteered before, please just pop in and say Hi 😊 We would love to get to know as many Hilliard Families as we can and of course we would love to show you our new kitchen 😊
Next up…. Halloween!
Love and Smiles
