From the Principal
Yura familes and carers
We are starting our newsletter this week with a big ‘cheer’ for our athletes at the National Cheer, Aerobic and Hip Hop competition. Further on in the newsletter you will see an article outlining all of the achievements of this wonderful group of athletes. Keep an eye on our Facebook page and the newsletter for details of our upcoming short, 5 week, dance programs designed for students to try dance and see if they would like to join a team. We are very proud of all of the athletes who performed at our assembly this morning.
Coach Lee and the Breakfast Club team are appreciative of the donations that they have received to date. Breakfast Club is every Thursday morning at the TuckerBox. We are still collecting donations of breakfast items – cereal, Longlife Milk, Bread and spreads (Vegemite, honey etc). All donations can be dropped at the TuckerBox or sent in with your child.
At Hilliard SS, we are working hard on strengthening our Student Wellbeing Program. We are pleased to announce that Hilliard State School has been accepted into the Wesley Kids in Schools pilot program. It is widely acknowledged that children and young people are facing mounting mental health challenges. This program has been developed in consultation with teachers and current research to improve mental health literacy and adaptive coping skills in children. It has close links to the Australian Curriculum and the Qld Department of Education’s Student and Learning Wellbeing Framework. The pilot is funded through the Brisbane South Primary Health Network and all activities and resources are provided free to the school.
During Term 4, 2022, Years 3 – 6 will participate in 4 x 45 minute sessions providing foundation knowledge and skills around emotional literacy, feelings in your body, self-care planning, and resilience. Teachers will be briefed on the program prior to the Wesley Kids presenters attending their classrooms and will be provided with follow up resources and activities. Parent Information Sheets will accompany sessions and parent sessions are also available. Parents and caregivers will be informed that Wesley Kids is attending classrooms and given an opt-out method for consent closer to the dates.
I would like to congratulate Tracey Young on the confirmation that her Deputy Principal position at Hilliard State School is now extended until the end of 2023. This is great news for consistency with the leadership team. I would also like to congratulate Jo Small on the extension of her contract, as Head of Inclusion, until the end of 2022.
I need to remind families that there is NO supervision before 8.40am in the morning. I ask all parents to ensure that their children are NOT arriving before that time and that you organise safe supervision for them up until that point. You will see Jabiru OHSC using the equipment and playgrounds before school, however, this is a paid service and not for the general school population. Please see the website for services who may be able to supervise your children before school. Once at school, students are to sit in the Undercover Areas until the bell rings for school to begin.
Finally, a reminder for our students who ride their bicycles to and from school. I spoke with the students this afternoon about complaints we have received from parents and other people in the local community about some of our students riding their bikes unsafely. Students are to walk their bikes out of the school grounds, walk them across the school crossing/s and are only to mount their bikes and commence riding when safely away from pedestrians. Parents, I would encourage you to discuss road and bicycle safety with your students.
Have a lovely weekend.

From Your Friendly Office Staff
Yura Hilliard families, what an amazing fun-filled week we have had! On Tuesday the Student Council held a free dress day to raise funds for the Queensland Cancer Council. It was great to see so many staff and students dressed in yellow, we are pleased to announce that we raised $528! On Thursday we celebrated Book Week, there were so many creative and clever costumes for the parade. It was lovely to see so many parents, grandparents and other community members on site to celebrate book week.
Volunteer Positions Available: We are in desperate need of volunteers to assist with managing our lost property. We have lockers in the year 3&4 undercover area that are full of misplaced items. Volunteers would be required to sort through the items and take any named items to classrooms etc... Please contact the office on 3820 1666 or pop in and see us!
Messages for students during class time - unfortunately we can't always get hold of your student to pass messages on during the day, we do have staff waiting at our main gates until 3.20pm, any students remaining after this time will be taken to the office.
Have a lovely weekend!

Queensland Road Safety Week
Queensland Road Safety Week is approaching, and we are asking all Queenslanders to join us in support of this week. It is a chance for all of us to be involved in making our roads safer, including those around our schools, especially for our kids. In 2022, we’re celebrating the many ways Queenslanders keep our roads safe every day. This year’s theme is ‘everyone has a role in keeping our roads safe’.
We’re all getting busier and often multi-task to get through the day, even when using the road. It is especially important to be road safe around our schools and remember to:
- Put Road Safety first every day
- Follow school zone speed limits
- Obey parking signage, especially in drop off and pick up zones
- Never double park
- Obey the directions of school crossing supervisors at all times.
Road Safety is everyone’s responsibility, so let’s make sure everyone gets home safely.
