Issue 10, 15th July 2022
From the Principal
Yura families,
Welcome to Term 3. As usual, here at Hilliard SS, we are straight back into our learning, leading and succeeding.
Welcome: We are excited to have some new members of staff joining us this term. We would like to welcome the following:
- Jo Small - Head of Inclusion
- Dustine Baker - Science Specialist
- Molly McCann - 1Mc
- Meg Bagnall - Prep B
- Danielle Cooney - The Arts (starting Wk 3)
As I am sure you are all aware, HR during this time is complex for most industries and we are certainly experiencing that also in the school setting. We do, however, ensure that our interview processes are focussed on hiring staff that will reflect the Hilliard SS culture. I know you will join us in welcoming our new staff to the community.
Website: We have been investing time ensuring that our school website is current and reflective of the great work that we are doing. Please take the time to go to the website and have a look through the changes and updates. If ever you notice an error, we would appreciate it if you could email us at admin@hilliardss.eq.edu.au so that we can correct it.
Facilities: As you move around the school, you will notice a number of changes. We are working very hard at ensuring our school facilities are of a high standard. We believe that if we show our students and community that we value our resources and facilities that they will then show the same respect. During this time, we asked for Regional Workplace Health and Safety to inspect our playgrounds for safety. Within this visit it was confirmed that our Yr 1/2 playground did not meet standard, so you may hear from the students that it has been closed. We are working with Regional Office and the P&C to investigate how we can have it replaced ASAP.
School Opinion Survey: The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in Term 3 and will close on 12 August 2022. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (8 and 11) will be invited to participate.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 11 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022. Check your junk email folders if you can't find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve. We value your input and feedback so that we can work together to make Hilliard even better than we are.
NAIDOC Week: This week we celebrated NAIDOC week where the whole school were engaged in cultural games, dancing and story telling. We were honoured to have special guests from Alexandra Hills State High School and support from our own First Nation's Support Teacher Aide. I was extremely proud to be able to present badges and certificates to our inaugural First Nation Leaders: Emilee R and Kiarla D. We are proud to begin supporting our First Nation students to develop their leadership skills and to help educate us about their culture. At Hilliard SS, we Get Up!, Stand Up! and Show Up!
Tuckerbox: Please remember that our Tuckerbox is re opening on the 20th July. We are currently looking at applications in the attempt to find a replacement for Emma.
Thank you for your support,
Leanne Witham

Curriculum Corner
Yura Hilliard Families and welcome to Term 3 at our wonderful school. I trust your children had a lovely break and are recharged and ready for a busy term.
There are many important events coming up this term.
Parent teachers interviews for P-6 will be conducted in Week 2 of Term 3, (18 July to 22 July). All parents/carers are invited to book an interview with their child’s teacher or teachers to discuss their progress by 12/7/22. Booking details and links are in the letter sent out in week 10 of last term. If you have missed this booking window and would like to see your child's teacher, please email them directly and organise an interview time.
On the 25-27 of July, the RACQ’s Streets Ahead road safety program is being delivered to our Prep to Year 6 students. It focusses on pedestrian, passenger and riding safety. Resource Packs with age-appropriate activities and videos demonstrating strategies are available here: www.racq.com.au/streetsaheadresources. These will assist you to continue to teach road safety, implement the strategies your children have learnt and apply them to your everyday lives.
I look forward to seeing many of you around our school.
Kind regards,
Laura McGhee Head of Department - Curriculum
NAIDOC Week
Yura Families,
On Wednesday, the 13th July 2022, Hilliard State School held our annual NAIDOC Week parade and activities. The activities this year included traditional ball games, story time and learning traditional dances.
All students enjoyed all activities with lots of smiles and laughter. I have included some photos from the day.
I want to thank Mr Michael Hume and the Biram and Yarrabin Dance Students from Alexandra Hills State High School for teaching our students the farewell dance and Mrs Jasmin Stephenson for her traditional stories.
Lastly, I am honoured and privileged to announce our first-ever First Nations Captains to our school community at our NAIDOC Week Parade. All our Year 6 Jarjums had the opportunity to nominate themselves to apply for these positions. They were also asked to prepare a speech and present it as a part of the leadership process.
This year our 2022 First Nations Captains are;
Kiarla Darr
Emily Routledge
Stay Deadly!
