Issue 9, 17th June 2022
From the Principal
Yura families,
Sports Days: We were certainly lucky to have perfect weather for our sports days. The days were filled with friendly competition, smiles, ball games, relays, cupcakes and running. A big thank you to Mrs Mills for her organisation of both of the days, even without much of a voice. Also a massive thank you goes to our staff for making the day a success, our students for their team spirit and behaviour and our community for all their support (P&C and parent/families). Our traditional 'cup cake' contest was strongly supported and raised a lot of funds for more playgrounds.
NAIDOC Week Celebration: In order to celebrate our First Nation's culture, we will be holding a day of experiences including traditional activities and a celebration assembly. This is held during our first week back at school on Wednesday, 13th July. We will put reminders on our Facebook page.
Pets on School Grounds: Whilst we all love our dogs and pets, I need to ask that you keep them outside the school grounds. This is a part of our workplace health and safety policy.
Parking: We have received correspondence from our local council with a reminder about parking. This following is an excerpt from their correspondence:
We have recently received complaints from parents of the school about parents disobeying parking rules during school drop off and pick up times. These offences include stopping in the Bus Zone to collect and drop off students and parking in excess of 2 minutes for the loading zone passenger drop off zones on Hanover Drive and Alexandra Circuit.
Redland City Council performs routine school patrols enforcing these parking regulations. These parking problems have been previously observed and were confirmed in our school patrol at the start of June. We will continue to do routine patrols and issue infringements to offending vehicles.
Please be mindful of the following: parents stopping in the bus zone and parents parking and walking into the school when stopped in the 2 minute passenger drop off/pick up loading zones.
Student Free Dress Day: Please note the student council has announced a Free Dress Day for Thursday, June 23rd. The theme is "Who do you want to be when you grow up?" Please bring a gold coin donation.
Report Cards: Report cards will be emailed home on Thursday, 23rd June. They will be sent to the email listed on our system. If you have updated your email address since Sem 2, last year, please ensure you let us know the change ASAP.
From the School Leadership Team
Parent Teacher Interviews - Term 3 Week 2
Parent Teachers Interviews will be offered for parents/guardians in Term 3 Week 2. These interviews are a good opportunity for discussion with your teacher about the progress of your child in Semester One and strategies to support them moving forward into Semester Two. A letter will go home to parents this Friday with instructions, and they will have access to book their interviews from 23rd June till the 12th July.
Academic Reporting - What does a C mean on your report card?
Academic Reports will be emailed home to parents/guardians on Thursday 23rd June. The information below outlines the C standard for students for P-6 from the QCAA.
P-2 - Working Within (WW) - The child can work with the curriculum content and demonstrates understanding of the required knowledge. The child applies skills in situations familiar to them.
Yr 3 - 6 - C Result - Evidence in a student’s work typically demonstrates a sound level of knowledge and understanding of the content (facts, concepts, and procedures), and application of skills.
Teachers use On Balanced Judgements to assess student for reporting.
On-balance judgments are professional decisions made by teachers about the overall quality of a student’s work that best matches the achievement standards.
Teachers make on-balance judgments about the evidence in student work:
in individual assessments for monitoring, formative or summative purposes
based on a collection of evidence or folio of student work that has been planned to provide sufficient evidence of achievement in relation to the curriculum content and achievement standards selected for summative purposes.
When reporting, teachers use the collection of evidence or folio of selected student work to make an on-balance judgment about how well the evidence in student responses to the range of assessments best match the valued features of a learning area described in the achievement standards. The on-balance judgment represents the student’s achievement at the time of reporting.
Curriculum Corner
Yura Hilliard Families!
We are almost at the end of a very busy term and it is lovely to finally see some sunshine. Our students have been busy with assessment recently and teachers are writing report cards. Student report cards will be emailed to parents and carers on Thursday 23 June, 2022.
On my travels around the school I have visited many classrooms and seen some of the amazing work on display.
Our teachers have introduced the concept of Learning Walls and Bump It Up Walls in classrooms to support student learning. These learning walls are a place that students can go to reference where they are at with their writing and what they can do to improve their writing. Teachers have unpacked their expectations with students and explicitly taught them how to use these spaces. Whilst teachers will always be there to support students, this initiative teaches students to use their independence to check in with their writing. It also teaches them to identify what the teacher is looking for in order to achieve a particular result.
When students visit these walls, you may hear them asking themselves questions like:
“What am I already doing in my writing?”
“What can I do to improve my writing?”
“What are the language features I need to include in my writing?”
Warm regards,
Laura McGhee

Visit by Registered Nurse for Free Prep Vision Screening
Good vision is important for a child’s educational, physical and social development. Vision screening checks for common eye conditions that may impact your child’s ability to see and therefore impact their learning and development.
A Registered Nurse will be visiting the school on 17th November 2022 to commence vision screening for children in their prep year. If you wish to have your prep child participate in this free vision screening program, please contact the school to obtain a consent form. Parents do not need to be present for screening, however if you would like to be, please contact the school to arrange this.
If your child’s vision is screened, you will be advised of the results in writing. If a vision concern is found, you will receive a phone call from the nurse to discuss referral to an eye health professional for further assessment. If a vision concern is identified and your child requires glasses, eligible health care card holders may be assisted with free basic glasses through the Spectacle Supply Scheme.
Participation in vision screening is not compulsory. If you do not wish for your child to participate in screening, please complete the consent form and indicate that you wish to decline screening.
If you have any questions, please contact the Primary School Nurse Health Readiness Program on 1800 687 372.
FREE PARENTING SEMINAR
Help your child or teenager prevent & cope with anxiety
Monday 25th July, 6:00 – 8:00PM, Hilliard State School
Many parents are coming to realise that their child or teenager is anxious, but are unsure of the best way to help them. Often, the ways parents naturally react to having an anxious child can accidentally increase anxiety. That’s why we’re proud to be hosting a FREE Triple P Seminar to help all parents give children useful skills and strategies to prevent excessive worrying and build confidence. These are practical tips and techniques to help you build up your child’s ability to handle uncomfortable emotions in a healthy way. You’ll learn more about underlying causes of anxiety, and what works to reduce it.
The Fear-Less Triple P Seminar can help you:
• Understand more about anxiety (and how to reduce it)
• Look at different ways to respond to your child when they’re anxious
• Give them skills to cope with challenging situations and solve problems
• Teach them a range of strategies based on proven principles
Triple P – Positive Parenting Program can help make raising kids easier, and help you guide them towards a happy and successful adulthood. The seminar is fun and friendly and it’s FREE! Research shows that Fear-Less Triple P actually helps the whole family feel less stressed.
REGISTER NOW: Visit the Triple P website to learn more and book your free spot.
Triple P is a world-renowned program (developed in Queensland!) that has already helped more than 4 million children and their families, and is currently offered free of charge to Queensland parents and carers of children up to 16 years. Triple P also offers other seminars, group workshops and one-on-one consultations, as well as Triple P Online, Teen Triple P Online, and Fear-Less Triple P Online (web-based courses you do in your own time, at your own pace). There are also a range of Stepping Stones Triple P programs, which are tailored specifically for parents of a child with a disability. New Fear-Less Triple P helps parents of anxious children and teenagers.
