Issue 7, 20th May 2022
From the Principal
Yura families,
COVID: We have had 23 positive cases this week which is a slight drop from last week. We are working hard, as a team, to ensure the students aren't affected greatly by changes of staff. Please keep your children home if they are unwell.
WINTER: With the colder weather starting we are noticing a number of students wearing jumpers. Overall, it is great to see most of our students wearing school jumpers or the school colours. Please ensure that they are following the school's uniform policy (hoodies are not to be worn). If you have any concerns/questions please call the school to discuss.
NAPLAN: I would like to congratulate our Yr 3 and Yr 5 students on their persistence and effort they showed over the last week. Thank you to all the teachers and staff involved to ensure our students felt supported and not overwhelmed.
P&C Day: I know the community will join me in thanking our P&C for all the work that they do to support our school. The families and parents involved in this team contribute a lot of their personal family time to make Hilliard an even better school for all. Thank you!
VOLUNTEER'S WEEK: The Hilliard SS community would like to thank and acknowledge ALL of the wonderful volunteers that assist within our school. The selfless kindness of volunteers helps to build and nurture our community and ultimately support our Hilliard children. Thank you.
ELECTION: Hilliard SS are holding a BBQ and stalls tomorrow to raise money for the school. I know they would appreciate any time and support that you can offer. Please see our Facebook page to register your support. I know I will be encouraging my friends and family to come and vote, buy a sausage and a cake.
Thank you for all of the support you give to your children and the school. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact us as I know we can work together to find solutions.
Enjoy your weekend,
Leanne Witham
Principal

From the School Leadership Team
National Simultaneous Storytime
Next Wednesday, 25th May 2022, Prep to Year 3 students and teachers at Hilliard State School will once again join in the National Simultaneous Storytime.
National Simultaneous Storytime is a day to celebrate literacy and build the foundations for a life-long love of reading in young learners, and is held each year by the Australian Library and Information Association. A picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, day cares and kindergartens all over the country and the world!
This year is the 22nd year of National Simultaneous Storytime, and the book selected for this year is ‘Family Tree’, written by Josh Pyke and illustrated by Ronojoy Ghosh. It is a lovely book, that is described as “a heartfelt celebration of family, community and seasons of life to cherish and to share.”
We would love for our Hilliard SS community to join with us for this wonderful occasion! Whether it’s reading the book at home with family members and younger siblings, checking out the NSS website, or trying some of the activities at home, National Simultaneous Storytime is a great way for families to get involved in the community of readers here at Hilliard, and around Australia!
Each class in Prep to Year 3 will be participating in some way, so that all students and teachers are reading ‘Family Tree’ at the same time, from 10:50 – 11:00am. Classes will also be completing some activities, which we will put on display in the office foyer.

Term 2 Event Calendar
***UPDATED***
From Your Friendly Office Staff
Wow! Can you believe we are already at the end of week 5? We are half way through the term!
Our school photos were taken on Wednesday, we are currently negotiating a make-up session as there were a number of staff and students absent due to illness. We will keep you posted as to when the photographers are available. The photography company have also extended the payment due date by 3 weeks to make up for the short notice. (Queensland School Photography, parents@qldschoolphotography.com.au
We are continuing to see an increase in COVID cases across the campus, in all year levels, we also have a number of confirmed cases of Chicken Pox. Please remember to keep your child at home if they are unwell. In accordance with Queensland Health Direction, schools should contact parents or carers if any child shows signs of illness and ask that they be collected immediately.
We ask for parents and carers to work with us in regards to this – please ensure that your contact details and emergency contacts are up-to-date.
Finally, a reminder to parents and the school community to exercise care and caution on the roads at drop off and pick up times. We have received a number of complaints and comments regarding parents not using the supervised crossings. We have two supervised crossings at entrance gates to the school - one on Alexandra Circuit and the other on Hanover Drive (the "pencil gate"). Please use these crossings, they are there to ensure our students get to and from school safely.
Enjoy your weekend, we will see you all in week 6!
Curriculum Corner
BRAINways Education.
Over the past two terms, students from Years 1-6 were invited to participate in a series of educational programs presented by BRAINways Education. These engaging and practical workshops inspired creative, new ways of thinking, and had students collaborating in teams to solve real-world problems. Some of the workshop topics included: Chocolate Mathematics; Hands-on Fantasy Writing; Myths: The Stuff Good Stories Are Made Of; and Crime Scene Mathematics.
Here’s some of the exciting and informative things that students had to say about the programs that they participated in…
· “I really liked researching the story myths, like Theseus and Minotaur because of the story structure and how it was written.”- Levi (5T)
· “I liked writing a nature myth because it was fun to invent how things in the world came to be.” - Mia (5T)
· “The crime scene was really fun because we worked as a team to solve a murder mystery.” - Kaius (3M)
· “I liked sorting M&Ms into colours to make fractions and then got to take them home to eat!” - Colby (2M)
· “I liked making up a character and a crest and creating a collage using these. It was fun!” - Everlyn (2M)
· “I enjoyed learning the difference between what is real and what is not real. I wrote a story about a girl called Jo who saved the family from a fox.” - Josephine (2/3C)
· “I liked the fantasy writing because I got to make up stories and do lots of drawing.” - Grace (2H)
· “I enjoyed using calculators to write sums to help discover how deep the blood stains went and how much blood would pump out per minute. I liked how I could use maths for real stuff in life.” - Clancy (3OK)

HILLIARD DANCE - SUBCOMMITTEE
Hilliard State School is known for the amazing opportunities provided to our students through the Hilliard Dance Programme.
This year the programme has 83 students from grades 3 – 6 involved in 4 different genre’s; Sports Aerobics, Pom Cheer, Hip Hop and Contemporary. Hilliard has over 20 teams competing in 2022 and it will be so exciting to see what they achieve this year.
The junior programme for those students in grade 1 and 2 who would like to start taking an interest in dance has recently begun. It will be great to watch them grow and develop their skills ready for teams next year.
The teams will be showcasing their routines for the first time at the upcoming practice competition being held in the Hilliard Hall on Friday 27th May. This is to help prepare the teams with a dress rehearsal in front of a live audience ready for the school aerobics Regional Competition coming up in June 2022.
Stay tuned to our updates in future newsletters to follow along with how well our Hilliard Teams are performing in 2022.
